The gist
From memes to misinformation in elections, deepfakes (AI-generated synthetic media) are reshaping how we perceive reality. While many assume deepfakes only impact celebrities and politicians, the truth is more unsettling: anyone can be a target.
As deepfake pornography rises, so do its harmful impacts on identity, power, and digital trust and yet legal protections remain scarce.
We designed an interactive visual novel that immerses users in the experiences of deepfake victims, using narrative design and UX research to raise awareness and drive advocacy.
Key Outcomes
✅ Designed an immersive story-driven experience in Twine with three branching endings.
✅ Integrated original art, pre/post surveys, narrative design, and research through team collaboration.
✅ Conducted usability and efficacy tests, finding that over 80% of users found the story engaging and realistic.
Main takeaway
This semester-long project revealed how storytelling can drive impact by engaging users through interactive experiences. I was later invited to speak about the game at a panel discussion following Another Body, a Just Film screening.
The experience deepened my belief that design is not just about usability. It’s about care, context, and power. It reminded me that when we design with empathy and intention, we don’t just inform; we make space for reflection, healing, and change.
